Integrity of a structure will govern how that structure functions. For example, if a car is to loose a wheel (loss of structure) then the car will not drive well (loss of function). If the chair you are sitting on is missing some screws (loss of structure) then it may collapse beneath you (loss of function). If a house has a poor foundation (loss of structure) then the windows will jam, walls will crack and eventually the house will fall apart (loss of function).
Loss of function and/or Pain from Slumped Posture?
Whether you can touch your toes, put your shoes on, look over your shoulder equally may not be your concern. Pain may only be your concern. We understand and can get you out of pain immediately. However, essentially we are interested in your function including strength.
WHAT IS POSTURE?
Posture is now seen by the shape of your skeleton and the tension in your muscles, spine and importantly the tissues surrounding your spinal cord in your spine- not so much the muscles.
Forward and twisted Posture
Interestingly, people generally believe that their skeleton shape is fine. Most people are seen via Advanced Biostructural Correction (TM) assessment & observation to be crooked from head to toe, not because of muscle problems but because their skeleton is crooked. This is a result of poor bone alignment and bone deformity.
Body Torque/Twist and Bone Shape Deformation
Over time and from stress (physical injuries/postural distortions) your bones slowly respond to the stress and shortened muscles and grow in the direction of the stress thereby resulting in your skeleton being asymmetrical and losing it’s shape- Remember about the car with the loose wheel?
Anterior Head Syndrome (AHS) the term used to describe the layers of structural shifts that can build up in a body, often observed as slumped, slouched, stooped ( Think Tech neck, texting etc..) or from previous physical injuries resulting in twisted posture.

This is reported daily and illustrates perfectly one way in which most of us are breaking our bodies down!
The most prevalent physical stress here on earth is gravity ~10 m/s/s. Our senses feel this as our weight.
So let’s say you are looking down at your phone, etc for several hours a day. That’s several hours of holding ~6kg/13lbs against gravity using your muscles, connective tissue, meninges and bones. If your muscles tire (which they will eventually) the weight of your head pulls bones out of alignment all throughout your body (but especially the base of the neck and lower back). Your muscles (no matter how strong) cannot “pull” every bone back to the correct position as we don’t have a muscle for every direction. In the spine (from the base of the neck down) we cannot pull a bone from front to back.
Since the bone alignment is off, your relaxed posture is off. Your muscles cannot fix you and you are stuck. The longer this cycle continues, the tighter some muscles get in “response” to the stress. These tight muscles are mostly in your posterior chain as they hold up your head. Other muscles become weak as they are not needed in the head down position e.g. deep neck flexors.
After several weeks/months/years the bones twist and change due to the severe pressures they are under. There is lots more to it though!
